The Experience Modification factor (E-Mod or X-Mod) is calculated by NCCI or state rating bureaus and applied to standard workers' compensation premium. A factor of 1.00 is industry-average. Below 1.00 indicates better-than-average loss experience; above 1.00 indicates worse.

Moving into a PEO can change effective comp economics because the PEO's policy and rating typically apply. Brokers should always model comp under both the standalone E-Mod and the PEO program when running a comparison.
