FMLA (Family and Medical Leave Act)
Federal law providing eligible employees of covered employers up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave per year for specified family and medical reasons.
FMLA applies to employers with 50 or more employees within a 75-mile radius. Eligible employees receive job-protected leave for the birth or adoption of a child, serious personal or family health conditions, and certain military exigencies.
State paid-leave programs (e.g., NY PFL, CA PFL, WA PFML, CO FAMLI) often run concurrently with FMLA. PEO administration of leave coordination is a common driver of PEO adoption for multi-state employers.
