Form I-9 (Employment Eligibility Verification)
Federal form U.S. employers must complete to verify each new hire's identity and authorization to work in the United States.
Form I-9 is required by the Immigration Reform and Control Act for every new hire. Employers must inspect identity and work-authorization documents within three business days of hire and retain the form for the longer of three years from hire or one year after termination.
PEOs commonly administer I-9 collection on behalf of co-employed workers, but the legal obligation generally remains with the client (worksite) employer. Audit-readiness of I-9 records is a frequent point of failure during ICE reviews.
